Making the Magnesium-Migraine Link

Up to 50 per cent of people during a migraine headache have low magnesium levels in their brain and red blood cells. A deficiency of magnesium in the brain can cause nerve cells to be overly excited, triggering a migraine attack. Studies show that by increasing the amount of magnesium in your body you can prevent a migraine.

In one study, researchers gave 81 migraine sufferers either 600 milligrams of magnesium or a placebo pill once daily for three months. After four weeks, migraine attacks was reduced by 42 per cent in the magnesium group. As well, the duration of migraine drug use significantly decreased among people who took magnesium supplements.

An increasing number of doctors believe that some of the most severe cases of migraines may actually be caused by an imbalance of key minerals such as magnesium and calcium.

To understand why magnesium might do the trick, it helps to take a look at how migraines happen.

Migraines are thought to be caused by vascular changes, or changes in the blood vessels, that reduce blood or oxygen flow in the scalp and brain. What causes these vascular changes? Things such as muscle contractions during times of stress and biochemicals called catecholamines and serotonin, which are circulating in the blood. Too much serotonin can cause blood flow to slow; too little can cause blood to move through too rapidly.

While mainstream researchers have long known that changes in serotonin and catecholamine levels cause migraine pain, stopping these changes has been a hit-or-miss proposition. An aspirin, for example, temporarily inhibits the effects of serotonin but does nothing to prevent a migraine from coming back.

It's very likely that magnesium deficiency is a widespread cause of migraines. Studies show that many people don't even come close to getting the daily value of magnesium, which is 400 milligrams. On a daily basis, 30 to 40 percent of American people take less than 75 percent of the daily value of magnesium.

What's more, several different things, from the caffeine in just two cups of coffee a day to the chemicals in most asthma medications, remove some magnesium from your system.Even stress, a frequent cause of migraines, can remove magnesium from your system.

Magnesium and Headaches

Headaches are a sure sign of stress. Your shoulders are hunched, your neck muscles are tight, and the tension spreads to the dozen or so muscles of your scalp. Magnesium can lessen the tension in those muscles and help all your muscles relax. It's not just tension headaches that are created by magnesium deficiency. Migraines, PMS headaches, and post-traumatic headaches are all affected by this miracle mineral.
To give you an indication of the scope of magnesium's actions, here are the many ways that magnesium can treat migraines:

  • Magnesium relaxes the blood vessels and allows them to dilate, reducing the spasms and constrictions that can cause migraines.
  • Magnesium regulates the action of brain neurotransmitters and inflammatory substances, which may play a role in migraines when unbalanced.
  • Magnesium inhibits excess platelet aggregation, preventing the formation of tiny clots that can block blood vessels and cause pain.
  • Magnesium relaxes muscles and prevents the buildup of lactic acid, which, along with muscle tension, can worsen head pain.

A Testimony

Further to our conversations today at Nutrition House, it was great meeting you both and it is with great pleasure to be able to provide you with a testimonial regarding the positive effects that Natural Calm has done for me.

The first response that I received from the lady (and I am sorry I did not get her name, she was a blond lady out front helping Dale) when I told her why I was there today (to tell her about my experience with Natural Calm) I will not forget it. She was so happy for me. She shared it with Dale and Don and asked me if I was willing to write a testimony.

I am a "classic migraine" suffer and have been since I was 18 years old. I am now 43. Many attempts to help my migraines have been tried. There is a lot of history here. I have been prescribed, what I call to lumped them all into one, "heavy-duty" medications to seeing a headache specialist. A lot of the times it was a vicious circle because I remember at one point in my life, after the 14th migraine in just one month, I would wonder which was worse - the cure or the cause. It would get to the point, because I felt I had no choice but to take something,  like the medications were stock piling in my system and then cluster headaches would happen. Because of the years of experience in suffering with migraines, I know and feel that I am an expert at staying away from triggers that I can control i.e. certain foods, but things like weather patterns, stress levels, my menstrual cycle are things that I cannot control. I remember the family doctor I had at the time (Dr. Ralph Suke) saying that I needed to try to not cross over the threshold. The more strikes against  me of triggering the migraine the higher chances were of me getting one. It made sense. So, I have always been very conscious of my triggers. However, given this, I felt almost like a prisoner to my migraines having to live within my limits all of the time because the migraines would still kept coming until......

It is hard for me to pin down the right words for me to express this but if I had to choice one word it would be FREEDOM!!!!!! Why freedom from my migraines? because I started taking "Natural Calm".

I met Dale Bolton, I believe it was around October 19, 2006, when he came to Owen Sound to promote Natural Calm on one of our local radio stations. He introduced me to Natural Calm at Nutrition House and I can honestly express that one side of me was a hard sell and the other side of me just wanted this to be so true so I could finally find something to cure my migraines.

I am so happy and relieved, you have no idea how much unless you have lived it. I can honestly say that I cannot believe it. I am still waiting for a migraine to pop up out of nowhere. I even tested the waters sort of speak i.e. eating a food that I would normally not be able to eat .....and still...... no migraine.

I started taking Natural Calm on the 19th of October and to date, I am migraine free. I am a person that averaged 3 to 4 migraines per month. I know it is only been a short time but it has been a very long time that I have had a break from my headaches two months in a row. The only other time I had a good break was times throughout my one and only pregnancy and when I was breastfeeding. That was 14 years ago. It was funny, because soon after I stopped breastfeeding, my migraines came back.

My only regret is that I wish I had known sooner about the positive effects that magnesium has had on me and my migraines. Lets hope this testimony has not jinks it. Fingers crossed big time.

The main reason why I have wrote this testimony is that I hope it  helps other migraine suffers think about and consider giving Natural Calm a chance. If I knew my testimony helped another migraine suffer make the decision and try Natural Calm and it worked for her or him it would make me sooooo happy inside that I helped just even one person....let alone millions of other migraine suffers out there.

Thank you so much.  If you have any questions or require any further information from me, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Most sincerely,
 M. Kim Davis
