1. How Much Natural Calm’s Magnesium Should I Take?

We believe that you need to educate yourself and get to know your body. Your body will tell you. We believe that you should increase your magnesium intake until your stools become comfortably loose. Then you are at your optimal level. You may need to increase or decrease your levels as your stress levels, brain usage and physical activity change. Often you need to start at a lower lever until your body gets used to it and then slowly increase.

We also believe that 70-90% of the population is deficient in magnesium and needs a lot of catching up to do (could take more than a year). Once you have “caught up” you can go to a maintenance level.

The RDA for an adult is around 400mg. This number is selected as a “safe” number for the average person; one RDA for all adults whether you are 250lb or 100lb, active or not. We believe the number is on the low side of what most of us need. You do need a starting point and an idea of what is typical, even if it is on the lower side.

Each tsp of Natural Calm’s Magnesium contains 205 mg of elemental magnesium citrate.  1 - 2 tsp daily will provide the RDA.  Most people will take Natural Calm’s magnesium to bowel tolerance.

We recommend 150% of the RDA because we believe:

  • Most people are deficient
  • That the RDA is on the low side
  • Most of the magnesium is going to calcium absorption and neutralizing an acidic diet
  • Consuming “only the RDA levels” won’t leave enough to combat insomnia, heart palpitations, muscle aches and other symptoms
  • Dr Carolyn Dean indicates that adults require 3-4mg of magnesium per pound of body weight
  • Pregnant women and children require 4-5 mg of magnesium per pound of body weight

2. Can I Take Too Much?

If you take too much magnesium, as with vitamin C, the body will use what it needs and eliminate any excess. The excess will go into the colon, causing it to hydrate and the effects are stools that are “too loose”. (Magnesium is a wonderful, natural laxative) This would be the only side effect, and any "overdose" is safely depleted through the kidneys. The only deviation on this is if you have kidney problems. Because the excess goes through your kidneys into your colon, a weak kidney could be a problem.

Magnesium Requirements

There are many factors that will vary our magnesium needs.

  • The more stress you are under, the more magnesium you need.
  • The more you use your brain in thinking, the more magnesium you use.
  • The more active you are the more magnesium you use up.
  • The larger frame you are, they more magnesium you require.
  • Prescription drugs (and illegal drugs) and alcohol require extra magnesium
  • Your bones are 2:1 calcium/magnesium ratio while your brain is more like 2:1 Mg:Ca
  • Magnesium is depleted by caffeine, alcohol, sugar, processed foods, perspiration, stress, too much calcium
  • Magnesium is depleted every 12 hours from the body and should be replenished daily

Magnesium Intake

Magnesium is found in many food sources but over processing depletes the magnesium in our foods as most of the magnesium ends up in the water we cook with. There is less magnesium in our foods now than in the 1950’s due to over farming, increased yields, less top soil and no magnesium fertilization. It is our opinion that we are not consuming as much magnesium in our foods as we think.
Another problem is that most of our diet is acidic and the magnesium and calcium in our diets are used to neutralize the acidic foods.
People tend to be worried about “not enough calcium” and consume extra calcium. Magnesium is needed to absorb calcium as our bones are 2:1 calcium:magnesium ratio. Many people have excess calcium in their bodies which will cause calcium deposits. Examples of calcium deposits include kidney stones, some forms of arthritis, and bone spurs.

3.  How do I prepare Natural Calm’s Magnesium Powder and Calm Plus Calcium Powder?

Boil your kettle and put ¼ cup of very hot or boiled water in a mug or glass.  Place 1 tsp (or your chosen amount of powder) into the water and stir.  Once the powder dissolves it will become clear ( ionic).  Drink hot like a tea or cool it down with cold water.  You may also add the dissolved Natural Calm’s magnesium to any drink you like.

4. Is Natural Calm’s Magnesium Safe to use while Nursing / Breastfeeding?

Yes! Taking Natural Calm’s magnesium supplement while nursing is actually recommended by Dr. Dean.  In her book, The Magnesium Miracle, she recommends that lactating/nursing/breastfeeding mothers should take about 600mg of magnesium due to their increased need for more magnesium. Enough magnesium during pregnancy will help with DNA formation of the baby and help ensure a healthier safer labour.  Taking Natural Calm’s Magnesium while nursing will help to keep babies magnesium levels balanced and will help the baby sleep better and not have constipation issues.

5.  When should I take Natural Calm’s Magnesium?

Many people like to take Natural Calm’s Magnesium half an hour before bed for a great night’s sleep.  People with any kind of chronic problem, i.e. muscle spasms, high blood pressure and diabetes should take their magnesium at least twice a day as magnesium is depleted from the body every twelve hours.

6.  When I open my bottle of Natural Calm magnesium I find that the bottle is half full.  Why is that?

Whenever you fill any container with a powder you have to leave room for it to settle.  If you were to weight the bottle you will find that the small container contains 8 ounces of powder and the larger one contains 16 ounces as indicated on the label.  The powder settles once it has been filled but you are receiving the amount stated on the bottle.

7. Can I take Natural Calm Magnesium with medication?

Yes you may take magnesium with most medications.  You should check with your Doctor if you are taking blood thinners (i.e. Coumadin) as magnesium naturally thins the blood.  Magnesium should not be taken at the same time as iron as magnesium and iron prevent each other from being absorbed.

8.  What are the contraindications of taking magnesium?

People who have severe kidney disease should not take a lot of magnesium.  Also people who have a really low heart rate (i.e. less than 50) and myasthenia gravis. Also anyone on blood thinners such as coumadin should consult their doctor as magnesium is a natural blood thinner.

9.  Should I take Natural Calm Magnesium with or without food?

You may take Natural Calm’s magnesium with or without food depending on your stomach.  Most people like to take it on an empty stomach but it is also well absorbed when you take food.

10. Are there any side effects?

The only side effect is loose stools if too much is taken.  Just cut back the size of your dose or divide the amount to twice a day. Magnesium is a gentle natural laxative that helps to detoxify the body.

11. Is Natural Calm Magnesium safe for babies and children?

Yes magnesium is required on a daily basis for everyone including babies, children and adults.  Children require 4-5 mg of magnesium per pound of body weight.

12.  What is the source of your magnesium and calcium?

Natural Calm’s magnesium is extracted from Sea salt.  Our calcium is sourced from sugar beets.
